MCCOLLEY BROTHERS PROPER
BIOGRAPHY
The McColley Brothers Proper Band is a “Power Trio of Brothers” centered on the guitar pyrotechnics of Floyd McColley, and the unique grungy vocals and bass bottom of Johnny McColley. Formed in late 2013, all members bring a culmination of talent and experience to stage which include touring, production, and many behind the scene skillsets that ensure a solid live or studio performance every time.
Each performance is packed with powerful originals and covers that the brothers magically make their own. The powerful overtones delivered to your ears are often perceived as coming from a six piece band. The genre covered by the band is primarily classic and southern rock however; a little chicken pickin’ country and straight up Chicago style blues are often included in the show. The brothers are currently writing and tracking their debut album and expect to release it on Johnny Rotten Records late 2014. Many of the songs are published demos along with video performances.
Floyd McColley - Lead Guitar and Vocals
At a young age and by the hand of his guitar-slinging father, Floyd learned the ins and outs of the local music scene. At that time, the Calumet Region of Northwest Indiana was a hot bed of local musicians, nightclubs and festivals. It was not uncommon for local musicians to play every night of the week.
Entering the mid-teen years brought an expanding interest in musical styles that led to many side projects. "Playing rock one day, straight country the next, and praise was like laughing with the sinners and singing with the saints", says Floyd. One day, a friend labeled him "The Chameleon", because of his ability to change styles and fit in to any situation. Over the years, Floyd played a variety of music with several bands: The Versatiles, Street Level, The County line Band, Southbound, The John Kuiper Band, Gary Lee Kirkpatrick, Mystique, St Johns Praise Band, Guilty As Charged, Branded Heart, Lonnie Brooks, Crosstown Band, etc..
Floyd has experienced many other music and non-related occupations such as, Guitar Repair and Fabrication, Guitar Technician, FOH Engineer and Studio Production, and Voice/Data Communication Network Engineer. For the past decade until late, Floyd worked as a government contractor regularly deploying and supporting our troops on multiple fronts.
Johhny McColley - Bass Guitar and Vocals
Johnny started listening and became aware of the impact of music at a very young age. Before he was a teen, he started tagging along with his father's band to help carry equipment. "The drummer would pay me $10 a gig to set his drums up and tear them down and I got to take them home. Well, you know what I was doing during the week, setting them up at home and learning to play", says John.
It wasn't long before Johnny started dabbling with the bass and guitar. Then in his early 20's, John became serious about playing in a band. In the early 90's, he formed a band with fellow guitarist Brian Rooney called Stoney's Stew. They were very successful locally and played to packed houses. Stoney's Strew released a four song lp of original material and may have made a go at it if circumstances would've been different.
John went on to play in a number of bands that include Guilty As Charged, Branded Heart, and Time Bomb. In the early 00's, the McColley Family opened a teen club featuring live music. As the house soundman, John honed his skills and ears as mixing for 4-6 bands every Fri. & Sat. The teen club soon became Floyd's Ugly Duck Lounge and beside bartending and cleaning toilets, he cut his chops on hosting jam nights every week switching between playing guitar, bass, and drums. During that time, John developed his acoustic guitar style as he was the sole entertainment on many occasions.
John went on to solo acoustic gigging, then landed a gig hosting jam nights every Thursday at Bozley's in Roselawn, IN. "That was a great gig which lasted nearly 2yrs and attracted some of NW Indiana's finest musicians. From those jams, a great classic rock band that was formed called THREE STORIES HIGH as well as a band called UNF8FUL. In 2012, John moved his family to Florida to further pursue his musical career.
